The standard we meet
We build this site to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. The accessibility is in the site’s own code. We do not use an overlay widget, plug-in, or toolbar that claims to fix a site after the fact.
What we do to meet it
- Structure. Every page has one main heading, headings run in order, and the page is divided into labelled landmarks so a screen reader can jump between the header, navigation, main content, and footer.
- Skip link. The first control on every page is a “Skip to content” link that moves you past the navigation.
- Keyboard. Every link, button, menu, and form field can be reached and used with the keyboard alone, in a logical order, with a visible focus outline on each one. That includes the text message consent checkbox.
- Forms. Every field has a visible label that is programmatically tied to it, help text is read with the field, and error messages are announced in plain words. The text message consent box is never pre-checked and is never required.
- Images. Every meaningful image has a text description. Decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
- Color and type. Text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 against its background (3 to 1 for large text). Information is never carried by color alone. Text resizes up to 200 percent, and the layout reflows to a single column with no sideways scrolling on a 320 pixel wide screen.
- Touch. Buttons and stand-alone links on phones are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
- Motion. Animation is decoration only. If your device is set to reduce motion, the site shows the still version, and nothing on the site flashes.
- Phone and text. You never have to use a web form. You can call or text (561) 397-9829 instead.
How we test
We run an automated audit (axe-core) against every page at phone, tablet, and desktop widths and fix everything it finds. We then tab through each page by hand, check the focus order, and check the forms with the keyboard. We repeat that whenever a page is added or changed. Automated tools find only part of the problems, which is why the manual pass matters.
Known limits
- Long articles contain data tables. On a narrow screen a wide table scrolls sideways inside its own frame. The frame can be reached and scrolled with the keyboard and is labelled for screen readers.
- Links inside a sentence are as tall as the line of text around them, which is smaller than 44 pixels. Stand-alone links and buttons meet that size.
- Some pages link to outside sources, such as court records, agencies, and news reports. We do not control how accessible those sites are.
If something here is not on this list and does not work for you, we want to hear about it.
